{"id":48,"date":"2009-03-31T14:50:00","date_gmt":"2009-03-31T19:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.yupingliu.com\/wordpress\/2009\/03\/31\/simulation-in-second-life\/"},"modified":"2010-03-17T02:53:36","modified_gmt":"2010-03-17T07:53:36","slug":"simulation-in-second-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.yupingliu.com\/wordpress\/2009\/03\/31\/simulation-in-second-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Simulation in Second Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A student of mine shared this article on CNN.com with me: &#8220;<a title=\"Can Second Life Help Teach Doctors to Treat Patients?\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2009\/TECH\/03\/30\/doctors.second.life\/index.html\">Can second Life Help Teach Doctors to Treat Patients?<\/a>&#8221;\u00a0 It is an interesting illustration of the potential best use of <a title=\"Second Life\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.secondlife.com\">Second Life<\/a>, at least in the short-term.\u00a0 While the original idea of Second Life was to create a virtual world where individuals can take on the role of an alter ego, the true business appeal of Second Life really lies in its capability to bring computer objects to life.\u00a0 Within the 3D environment, individuals can reenact real-world scenarios in a semi-real setting, a departure from the 2D dominated Internet.\u00a0 Thus, what is most useful about Second Life is not really the hundreds of thousands of users in the network, in contrary to other social networks such as <a title=\"Facebook\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\">Facebook<\/a>.\u00a0 Rather, it is the ability to simulate real-world scenarios that may be difficult or expensive to take place in reality.\u00a0 Such applications include product development and demonstration; customer collaboration; teleconferencing; education and other types of simulation; and team work across geographic areas.\u00a0 While businesses have entered Second Life a few years ago to build a &#8220;presence&#8221; in Second Life for marketing purposes, I envision continued use of Second Life to focus more in these other business areas and applications.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A student of mine shared this article on CNN.com with me: &#8220;Can second Life Help Teach Doctors to Treat Patients?&#8221;\u00a0&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[27,7],"tags":[59,57,73,58,72],"class_list":["post-48","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-reality_check","category-social_media","tag-corporate-innovation","tag-second-life","tag-technology","tag-virtual-3d","tag-virtual-world","post-archive"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Simulation in Second Life | Ping!
